I think the interesting thing is that we might not look for items at all, rather than asking “where can I buy this? or even get this?” We’ll tell an AI what we need, our budget and what’s important to us and let it do the hunting.

They only way I see that happening is if they are marketed as search engines for shopping which in my opinion is quite limiting. Why would the search engine be so specific??

But for bigger decisions like a laptop or a vacation rental, I can see myself letting an AI do the research for me. The brands that win will be the ones that make their product data clean, accurate, and easy for AI to pull from. SEO isn’t dying, it’s just shifting.

I personally don’t think there’s a world where AI agents become the new search engine for online shopping because customers can be indecisive alot of times and would always want new recommendations and as such seek them from different sources so its hard to say a customer would entirely put their trust in one channel to always give them shopping recommendations, unless that channel delivers a 100% all the time.

The key is trust. If an AI consistently gives good recommendations, people will rely on it more. Brands need to focus on making their data accurate and trustworthy because that’s what AI will use to decide who gets recommended.

I think AI agents will become a major shopping layer, but I’m not convinced they completely replace traditional search. Sometimes I actually want to browse, look at different brands and see what real customers are saying. An agent giving me three recommendations is convenient but it also removes some of that discovery.

Also, I’d prefer this for boring purchases like if I need printer ink, a replacement charger or a specific appliance part, I don’t want to spend 45 minutes comparing 20 listings. But for something like clothes, furniture or expensive electronics and even jewellery, I still want to see the products myself before deciding.
