Would you trust an AI-native help desk over Zendesk or Intercom?

I’ve been thinking about how customer support platforms are evolving, and it feels like there’s a shift happening.

For years, the standard setup was pretty straightforward: use a help desk like Zendesk or Intercom to manage tickets, then layer AI on top to answer common questions or assist agents.

Now I’m seeing platforms take a different approach by building the AI agent and the help desk together instead of treating them as separate products.

For example, here’s how I’m looking at a few options:

Platform How I See It
Chatbase AI-first platform with a built-in help desk where AI and human agents work from the same support workflow.
Intercom Fin AI integrated into the broader Intercom customer communication platform.
Zendesk AI AI capabilities built into Zendesk’s established support and ticketing ecosystem.

The AI-native approach seems interesting because the agent isn’t just answering questions, it can work alongside the help desk by drafting responses, summarizing conversations, routing tickets, and handing cases over to a human with the full conversation already attached.

At the same time, Zendesk and Intercom have been around for years and have mature support operations that a lot of companies already depend on.

So I’m curious how people who’ve used these platforms think about it.

  • If you were choosing today, would you rather start with an AI-native help desk or a traditional help desk with AI added on?
  • Has anyone moved away from Zendesk or Intercom to an AI-first platform?
  • What ended up mattering most after your team had been using it for a few months?

I’m less interested in feature lists and more interested in what made your day-to-day support operations easier, or harder.

Yes, for fast-moving teams that prioritize instant resolution and lower overhead, AI-native help desks often outperform legacy giants like Zendesk and Intercom, which are better suited for complex enterprise ecosystems requiring deep manual ticketing workflows.

Yes. While Zendesk and Intercom treat AI as an add-on feature to assist human agents, a native AI help desk is built from day one to autonomously resolve issues end-to-end, making it faster and more efficient for routine support.

I’d probably judge it by the workflow rather than whether it’s AI-native. If the platform combines reliable ticket management with useful AI, good integrations and a smooth human handoff, that’s more important to me than the label. The AI should make the support team’s job easier, not create another system to manage.
